Photo Of The Week
September 12, 2016

I’m back with my weekly photo installments!  I know, I’ve taken the past couple Mondays off – two intentional, one not so much.  If you’re a regular reader of my blog, you might remember me mentioning I’ve recently decided to start selling a collection of my photography prints, along with a few other items.  Ordering prototypes and going through each and every one of my thousands upon thousands of photos inspired me to take the final two weeks of August off from this part of my website.

What happened last weekend, then?  To make a long story short, one of my toenails was ripped off from the bed and I couldn’t walk flat-footed until last Wednesday.  I even had to – gasp – take a brief hiatus from baking!  Now, while I would love to lie to all of you and claim my injury happened while out adventuring, I’m embarrassed to report the incident occurred at one in the morning on our living room sofa, shortly after I introduced Kevin to the wonder that is An Affair to Remember.

This weekend, however, I was fully recovered and spent a wonderful few hours on Saturday afternoon hiking at Deer Creek Open Space Park.  The views were incredible, the sky a bright blue, and we hardly saw another person while out on the well-maintained trails.  Less than an hour away from Denver, I can safely this park is a new local favorite.  I would promise y’all a write-up on the park in upcoming weeks, but in case you haven’t noticed, I’m still posting articles detailing my adventures in Europe six months ago.   To put it gently, I’m a tad behind.  But it’s coming sometime before, say, Christmas.  I promise.

Aside from breathtaking panoramic vistas, which began nearly as soon as we started hiking at the park, Kevin and I also bore witness to a Colorado first for us: a rattlesnake.  Were we scared?  Yes.  Luckily, the demonic-looking thing was off the trail and a woman kindly gave us a heads-up before we passed it quickly but calmly.  After arriving back home, I did some additional research on the park and discovered a part of Deer Creek is officially called “Rattlesnake Gulch.”

At that point, I realized we had the sighting coming, but even so, I was hoping we would make it through our first Colorado summer without a rattlesnake sighting.  Oh, well.  No such luck.

Confession: the lack of critters and other creepy crawlers is one of the reasons why I enjoy Iceland so much.  It’s too darn cold and there’s not enough vegetation for those outdoorsy menaces.  On the other hand, I love summer, warm weather, and sunshine – at a certain point, it just becomes a coin toss.  Perfect hiking weather or no critters?  Hmmm…
